Conan's Atlantean & the Kurgan Sword: How Realistic are They?
I took a trip to the GTA (yes, it's really called that... Greater Toronto Area) and visited two stores, Medieval Depot and Fire and Steel. The purpose was to look at and talk about various swords and other weapons from movies, anime, and video games. It's always better to analyze (i.e. over-think) a design when you can actually hold it in hand to figure out what practical challenges there might be.
Before you get too excited... no cutting or other tests here. These are made as lower priced wallhangers with stainless steel blades. They work as props to get a feel for the design, but they are not intended for practical use.
The swords I'm handling in this video (NOT battle-ready):

Can We Make this "Ninja" Weapon Work? - Kusarigama Test
Переглядів 55 тис.19 годин тому
Talking about a design in theory is all fine and good, but I was itching to mess around with a safe sparring version (or rather approximation) of this interesting Japanese weapon. If you want to see a proper demonstration, look elsewhere. :) This is just a clumsy exploration from an outsider perspective, based on curiosity rather than specialized skill. The previous look at the Kusarigama and i...
The Best Historical Weapon for Defending Stairs?

Something or someone lurks at the bottom of a staircase, trying to come up, and you (or rather, a fictional character) must stop it... What would be the most practical defensive tools for this hypothetical scenario? Is Dual Wielding Swords REALLY That Awkward?
Переглядів 79 тис.14 днів тому
A lot has been said about why dual swords (of similar length) were not terribly common in history overall. But is it really an unrealistic fantasy trope or is there some merit to grabbing a second sword instead of a shield / buckler / parrying dagger? At this point I feel like there has been some over-correcting, and claims have been made that go too far in the opposite direction, portraying an...
This Sword is Beastly! (Two-Handed Katzbalger?)
Переглядів 74 тис.21 день тому
Have you ever wondered what a two-handed Katzbalger would be like? There are some depictions of Landsknecht mercenaries with a Zweihander that is basically that, with "pretzel" quillons and a similar pommel shape. Lancelot Chan created a design just like that, in the form of the "Red Baron" German battle sword. He sent me one along with cutting material, so this is my first impression and test....
What's the WORST Sword?

The Best Weapon for Fantasy Halflings (No, Not Spears)
Переглядів 104 тис.Місяць тому
This is for those of you who enjoy some (modest) measure of realism in your fantasy scenarios, be it fictional writing, tabletop RPGs or video games. Which historical arms and armor would make the most practical sense for a short, agile character who is not as stout and tanky as a dwarven warrior? Here is my perspective on that, informed by experience with HEMA (historical European martial arts...
How Good is a Hidden Katana (Shikomizue)?
Переглядів 124 тис.Місяць тому
During Japan's Meiji period the wearing of swords was banned, so of course people did it in secret, carrying blades hidden inside inconspicuous walking sticks or canes. The concealment comes at a price, making it a worse design in an open duel compared to a traditional katana. But does it make up for its drawbacks through its unexpected effectiveness for self-defense in a surprise attack on the...
Does this "Dirty Trick" Actually Work in a Sword Fight?
Переглядів 62 тис.Місяць тому
Is it even really a dirty trick, or was it just part of a "whatever it takes" mentality back in history? If you had to defend your life on medieval streets or a battlefield, would it really matter whether throwing your secondary short sword or dagger in the opponent's face is "dishonorable", as long as you win? And would it even be effective? Let's take a look at an example from Japanese Kenjut...
This Destructive Shield Test Almost Went Wrong...
Переглядів 107 тис.Місяць тому
I got an undecorated version of the Ottoman Kalkan reproduction from Salahs Archery to do destructive testing on, and it didn't go quite the way I expected. The shield took a lot of damage but did its job well, especially considering how light it is. I started with hits from blunt swords and a bit of sparring, then shot it with a modern crossbow (the Cold Steel Cheap Shot) and a medieval crossb...

It could be that the Kurgan's Sword in teh movie was a modified design that was constructed as multiple blade segments, and was designed to only be stored in the suitcase once for smuggling, before then using some form of fictional alchemical "Steel Cement" applied between each one. The setting itself has a lot of magic and sword gadgetry going on, especially if you look at the expanded materials outside of the movies, such as the books and the show.

Arnold has HUGE hands and is a Huge man in general. Just based off how much space he had for his hands and how much larger of a man he is than Skallagrim the sword in the store is tiny compared to the one in the movie..

When it comes to the scene where the Kurgan puts his sword together it was like one of those scenes where an assassin opens a suitcase and pulls out the parts for a sniper's rifle. Granted it is helpful to be able to conceal such a weapon, but the notion the sword could be broken down into parts and still function is pure Hollywood.

Even when so-called experts in the arts purported to have used this style of weapon are demonstrating its possible use in direct combat, I can't help but think that this is often being done in a place and manner that's all-but devoid of necessary context. A well-lit and spacious gymnasium would be an example of such an out-of-context place. Whereas the type of person who may or may not have actually used such a tool as a weapon, would surely have had a lot more to work with than just the tool itself; terrain, darkness, fore-planning, the element of surprise, etc. I believe any-such user would have done anything and everything they could to avoid squaring-off against an opponent who's been trained to do deal with precisely that scenario, armed with weapons designed to excel in precisely that role; themselves being armed with only this bizarre tool. Especially when their real job had nothing to do with killing anyone themselves; sneaking, climbing, listening to important information, etc. I believe that this tool was arranged as it is to facilitate mostly-climbing; specifically the upper-class, and often fortified, architecture of the day. And if the user needed to deploy it as a weapon, out of desperation, it would _maybe_ be better than nothing (?).
